Who is DADAA?

DADAA’s Mission: Arts for Social Change.
DADAA is the largest arts and disability organisation in Australia. For
over 16 years, DADAA has affirmed its reputation through working with
communities across WA to increase opportunities for people experiencing
disabilities and or disadvantage to gain participatory access to the arts and
cultural life of their communities.


What is Emergence?


Jointly funded by the Mental Health Commission and the Department for
Culture and the Arts, through the Looking Forward Fund, the Emergence
Project has been established to build long term – cross sector partnerships
around the needs of the local mental health community, who over the next
few years will have the opportunity to work in the Cannery Arts Centre
and local studios to build cultural approaches to the experience of mental
illness.

In developing the Emergence Project DADAA and the local project partners
- BOICO, the Cannery Arts Centre, DCA, DSC, Esperance Community Arts,
Country Arts WA, Esperance Mental Health and the Esperance Police -
have joined with local artists and people with chronic mental health to
collectively explore a local cultural response to the mental Health and wellbeing
of Esperance.

DADAA works on a six-year intervention with regional communities - we
know this work takes time, multiple responses and approaches.
The Arts has real potential to raise participation levels, decrease social
isolation, increase connections between people with mental illness and
the broader Esperance community. But most importantly the Arts provides
the mechanism for people with mental illness to self- advocate and start a
broad local dialogue about mental illness in this community.

Who is it for?

Anybody living in Esperance and surrounding regional communities who
experiences a mental illness and/or disability.
How do I get involved?
The following pages outline the workshops on offer this year for the
Emergence program. Four artists, working in a variety of different artforms,
are offering free weekly workshops.
The workshops will run in three ten-week blocks and will allow participants
to build skills and work towards creating significant artworks.
Use this booklet to explore what’s on offer, then fill in the application form
on the back page and submit it as directed. You will then be contacted to
confirm your involvement in the workshops.
