The nominations were judged solely on their contribution to the arts or artistic achievement during the 2009-2011 2 year period but we had a number of nominations that cited contributions to the arts over several decades and we will consider adding another category for lifetime achievement for the next Art Awards.
Here are the nominations and a brief description as to why they were nominated:
Shining Star - for voluntary contribution to the Arts
Margot Siemer, for her involvement in the Cannery Arts Centre; tireless fundraising for the 300 Club, gallery sitting, school workshops, involvement in Dare to Wear and the Festival of the Wind
Heather Timms, for volunteering her time as a pianist, playing for Senior Citizens, school choirs and other community concerts
Derek Clarke, for his involvement in A Servant to Two Masters and No Sex Please we're British, for all the energy and effort he has put in to mentoring all the other performers and backstage crew, many of whom were newcomers to the theatre, whilst also performing in lead roles. Derek has also administrated the Bijou website since it was set up and manages all the organisation's social media networks.
Wendy Stewart, for volunteer work at the Cannery Arts Centre including opening nights, childrens workshops and gallery attending.
Shannan Gillespie, for her key role in restarting the Eseperance Bay Music Club, her involvement in the Festival of the Wind committee, her voluntary hours outside of her work at the Cannery Arts Centre on projects such as the Driftwood Music Event, Dare To Wear, The Cannery Fete, and her work securing funding for improvements to the Cannery Arts Centre.
Shooting Star - for outstanding artistic achievement
Elaine Morcombe - for opening a new gallery and studio space 'Transition Artspace' and for consistently producing high quality works
Monika Thomas - for opening a new gallery and studio space 'Transition Artspace' whilst working on finishing off her fine art degree
Nicole Chalmer - for her involvement in the last two Festival of the Wind's public art pieces, the ephemeral environmental art at the Wetlands and the foreshore Concrete Sculptures. Also for being selected as a finalist in the Waterhouse Art Prize twice, which is Australia's biggest Natural History Art Prize. The image shown below; 'Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat' was selected for works on paper in 2009.
This work is entitled 'Glamorous Blue Flier' and was selected for the Sculpture section in 2010.

Dewi Hyde - for currently being in receipt of a mid-career mentorship grant through Regional Arts Fund, administered by Country Arts WA. You can see his work on his blog - South (link to the right)
Cindy Poole - for currently being in receipt of a mid-career mentorship grant through Regional Arts Fund, administered by Country Arts WA, for running her own gallery and studio space. You can see Cindy's progress on her blog - (link to the right)
Rising Star - for an emerging or young artist
Jodi MacNish - Jodi is on the Bijou Theatre committee, represents the Esperance Theatre Guild on the ECA committee and is the Bijou Manager for Front of House. Jodi also has had several supporting roles on stage recently and played the lead female role in 'No Sex Please We're British'.
Abbe Stewart - Abbe has developed and driven the Cannery Arts Centre's Young at Art program which was sponsored by Healthway Act Belong Commit during 2010. As the Cannery's volunteer youth arts worker she has conducted youth surveys in the community, set up Young at Art on Facebook, applied for funding, plans and coordinates youth arts workshops and tutors others. She also gallery sits, looks after the office and is on hand at opening nights of exhibitions to help out.
The winners will be announced on the night, so if you have been nominated and don't have a ticket yet, make sure you get down to Esperance Community Arts Gallery this week as there are only a handful of tickets left.
