The 2011 Art Awards and Dare to Wear coordinated by Esperance Community Arts and the Cannery Arts Centre, sponsored by Esperance Showbizz was a fantastic success. Queues formed outside the Cannery Arts Centre on Sat 28th May whilst artists and performers readied their creations backstage.
A total of twenty works of art were displayed, many performers providing humorous and in character performances on a centrestage catwalk accompanied by a medley of artwork appropriate music. Short but sweet, they wowed an appreciative audience of 150 well heeled guests sipping on complimentary champagne. Following on from the Dare to Wear performance was the presentation of the Esperance Art Awards.
The evening was hosted by Kier Perryman who announced the nominees for each award and Thuriyya Ibrahm, chairperson of ECA was on hand to congratulate and award the winners of each category. Abbe Stewart received the award for Rising Star, for youth voluntary contribution to the Arts, Derek Clarke won the Shining Star award for voluntary contribution to the Arts and Nicole Chalmer took home the Shooting Star award for outstanding artistic achievement.
The crowd stayed on afterwards to enjoy outstanding performances by British soul singer and her partner known as Kyla Brox Duo.
The Esperance Art Awards and Dare to Wear will be a biennial event, with the next one planned for 2013.
