The projects have an emphasis on health, wellbeing and social inclusion and some of them have been specifically designed to provide opportunities to members of the Esperance community who may be disadvantaged in some way or have a number of unique barriers that make it difficult for them to access existing Arts and Cultural activities already provided by our many and varied wonderful Arts groups and Arts related businesses.
The purpose of Healthway funding is to promote the mentally healthy message of Act-Belong-Commit, which encourages individuals to take action and get out and do positive things that interest them, join a group or find a community to be part of and commit to some projects or long term activities. All of these things are known to help us stay mentally healthy and that's why they are important.

Act-Belong-Commit Visual Storytelling Workshops for Adults
These workshops will take place at Esperance Community Arts Gallery and are a partnership with Bay of Isles Community Outreach (BOICO). Participants need a referral from BOICO or the Community Mental Health Team. Workshops will take place over an extended period of time and are coordinated by artist and community arts practitioner Monika Thomas.
Below is some information regarding an information session for interested participants which will take place next Friday 8th July at 10.30am.
You are welcome to attend to find out if you are interested in one of the two workshops offered or if you would like to access some 1:1 art tuition. Whilst skills building is high on the agenda the approaches will be playful and relaxing. You do not have to have any prior experience in art making. There is no right or wrong in either workshop - only new experiences to be made - which will add to your knowledge base.
All materials will be provided. You just bring your enthusiasm & your own morning/afternoon tea.
Each group will have a max. of 5 participants. So it is important that you chose a workshop you will enjoy and are committed to attend from beginning to end. Workshop and 1:1 sessions can be arranged for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday morning or afternoon and maybe an evening or Saturday morning session, depending on what suits the majority of those who want to attend. We will be doing painting first and then Introduction to environmental art. Pick the one which seems best suited for you.
1. Painting This workshop is to develop a personal colour palette and experiment with mark making using different painting implements (brushes, feathers, sticks, home-made brushes....etc.). This course is experimental which will lead to you becoming more confident choosing materials, marks, supports and themes to express yourself.
2. "Drawing Nature - Out and about" Introduction to environmental art The focus will be to explore and engage with nature . Once a group and meeting times have been confirmed we will meet and decide together what area in the Museum Park we are going to explore. Using first a group approach we will create one or several interventions in this space to see how these physical acts alter our experience of this space. We will be documenting and telling the story of our journey through photography, drawing and text (depending on what individuals want to contribute).
We will explore mark making with different tools/mediums and on different supports, including drawing in nature with natural materials. This will help break the stereo-type of what drawing is and help us to explore how we can respond to nature, rather than copying from nature.
Part 3: One on one Sessions: These sessions are for specific purposes, such as: · If you already have an artistic skill and wish to work on a project of your own - maybe leading to a small exhibition project you can apply for regular support meetings. Sessions with the artist can be used to brainstorm & plan your project and meet at regular intervals to discuss progress being made.
· If you have an interest/skill and wish to receive some support but are not comfortable in a group environment you can apply for 1:1 sessions. Your goal can be to learn a new skill and maybe join a group at a later stage.
· If there are 1 or 2 people with a similar interest which is not covered by the group workshops then to team up and meet at the ECA studio and work with the support of another artist might be the way to go for you. You may see this as a small group environment to learn new skills, improve on skills you already have or as a preparation step to join a group later.
