The competition comprises four key categories: Casual Wear, Evening Wear, Wearable Art and Society & The Environment.
In 2010, Western Australia celebrated its 21st year of AATFA and for the first time a regional heat was held in Esperance, featuring 10 garments from Esperance Senior High School students.
This year, 35 garments were entered into the local competition, making the heat in Esperance one of the largest regional events across Australia. The heat was organised by the Esperance Apex Club and held on Saturday 6th August at the Esperance Civic Centre.
The students worked hard on their projects at school and at home and each had a minute and a half to show off their work on the catwalk to the audience and, most importantly, the judges. Leonie Hard and Monika Liebeck, two local volunteers, judged the competition in combination with three state judges and selected seven designers to proceed to the State Final at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Perth on September 25th. State winners will participate in the National Final on October 15th at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney.
Entrants selected to compete in the State Final were: Naomi Halls (Formal Wear), Kia Harris (Casual Wear), Ella Moir (Casual Wear), Naomi Halls (Casual Wear), Sarsby Martin (Casual Wear), Rosie Wheeler (Wearable Art) and Shaina Edmondson (Wearable Art).
